Hey ya all!

I want to collect all diffrent nicknames, the translaters in the world gave Katniss at the place of Gale.

Please send me her nickname in your language, if it's not already listed below. An explanation of the meaning would be nice!!
Thank a lot. I hope I'll be able to collect some names. This will be fun as I'm a language addict :floating:

Real name: Katniss Meaning: An herb, sagittaria, that is also called arrowhead (arrowherb in German). I like the combination of her name + skills

:new:WOW! So many answers already. Thank to ya all!! :happycry: It turned actually out diffrent than I thought. I thought that, if in my langage, her nickname differs from the English one, that EVERY nickname would differ. But this is a nice collection of catnip however :giggle:

:pointr:  Arabic: Catnip = "نعناع الهر " [na' na' alher] in Arabic
:pointr:  Armenian: Catnip = "PishiChaman" in Armenian
:pointr:  Brasilian Portuguese: Catnip = "Nepenta" in Brasilian Portuguese
:pointr:  Danish: Kattua for Katniss. Katteurt Meaning: Catnip ;-)
:pointr:  Dutch: Catnip
:pointr:  English: Catnip Meaning: Catnip = An herb cats are attracted by.
:pointr:  Finnish: Catnip = "Kissanminttu" in Finnish
:pointr:  French: Catnip = "Herbe à chats" in French
:pointr:  German: Kätzchen Meaning: Kätzchen = the German expression for a little cat, like "kitty", Other words: Spotttölpel (Mockingjay)
:pointr:  Greek: Catnip = "είδος δυόσμου" in Greek (don't ask me how to pronounce this!!! Ah stop, someone told me. It's "kattatheozmos")
:pointr:  Indonesian: Katnis for Katniss
:pointr:  Irish Gaelic: Catnip = "nip gath" in irish Gaelic
:pointr:  Japanese: Well, this one was actually pretty hard to understand, which means, I did not got it at all!! :faint: here's the original comment:
I'm sure that マタタビ(matatabi), キャットニップ (catnip) Simple copy, 木天蓼(mokutenryou), チクマハッカ(chikumahaka), or イヌハッカ(inuhaka) is Katniss in Japanese(There's a couple more, but I don't think it's too important). Each one has a slightly different meaning, but basically is the same thing. マタタビ(matatabi)(same thing as 木天蓼(mokutenryou)phrased differently)is named after the cat, because cats seemed to like it. チクマハッカ(same thing as イヌハッカ) means cat mint. I hope this wasn't too confusing...
:pointr:  Korean: Catnip = " 개박하 " [gaebagha] in Korean
:pointr:  Latvian: Catnip = "kaķumētra" in Latvian
:pointr:  Mandarin: Catnip = " 慈姑 (ci gu)" which means catnip and/or arrowhead and "kindly aunt" <--- Isn't this adorable!???
:pointr:  Polish: Catnip = "Kocimiętka" in Polish
:pointr:  Russian: Catnip = "Кошачья мята" in Russian
:pointr:  Serbian: Catnip = "Macina Metvica" in Serbian
:pointr:  Spanish: Catnip = "Calamento" or "Calaminto" in Spanish. Other words: La chica en llamas (The girl on fire), Chica de fuego (Fire girl), Sinsajo (Mockingjay)
:pointr:  Turkish: Catnip = "kedi otu" in Turkish

In danish her nickname is "Katteurt", which means catnip... but then, they also changed her name to Kattua (or something in that manner) instead of Katniss.

I don't know why they did it.. they just did..

Yeah :P I remember being so frustrated by it while one of my classmates read the danish translation of Hunger Games. He would constantly ask me things like, "What do you think of that scene when Kattua is at the reaping? Pretty cool, huh?"
Meanwhile, fume would come out of my ears while muttering, "Her name is KATNISS.. not Kattua."

It's ridiculous really, but what can you do, right? Hoped it helped you anyway ;)
